Hepatitis A
Refers to liver inflammation caused by infection with the hepatitis A virus.
The Hepatitis A virus is found in the stools (faeces) of infected people and is transmitted due to inadequate hand washing or poor sanitary conditions.
Hepatitis B
Is a virus that causes inflammation of the liver.
The Hepatitis B virus is known as a blood-borne virus because it is transmitted from one person to another via blood.
Who Should be Vaccinated?
- People who have liver disease or who have had a liver transplant
- People who regularly receive blood products, eg. hemophilia
- Food handlers
- Sexual partner with hepatitis B
- Live with someone with hepatitis B
- Are a prisoner
- Men who have sexual contact with other men
- People travelling to developing countries
- People who are at occupational risk include
- Child care workers
- People who work with intellectually disabled
- Health care workers eg. nurses, doctors, physio, chiro, acupuncture etc
- Sewerage workers
